Spam & Virus Filtering - SaaS

Preventing Spam and Email Viruses Arriving

Service quite simply removes the headache with email communications and ensures it becomes the vital business asset it was designed to be. The benefits of the service are delivered without any client side hardware or software, therefore removing the associated costs and risk. As a managed service the user is assured that systems are monitored 24 hours a day, each day of the year by experienced engineers to ensure that email is being managed correctly.

How it Works

Before the email even reaches your network it is processed through our filtering servers, where emails with Viruses or Zero-Hour Viruses are deleted and any email determined to be Spam is transferred to the quarantine. Only good emails are then forwarded to your computers. Daily a single report email is sent to each user, identifying any email added to the Spam Quarantine in the previous 24 Hours.

SecureDesk-Mail Details

SecureDesk-Mail Service comprises four key processes, Virus Scanning, Spam Scanning, Content Scanning and (optional) Image Scanning.

Virus Scanning (100% removal with 0% false positives)

Service core anti-virus solution comprises multiple best of breed identity based engines, which are critical in the detection of viruses. However, as mass outbreak viruses tend to replicate and distribute at such high speed, the time taken by identity based anti-virus vendors to capture, analyse and release tested updates to the anti-virus engines leaves organisations exposed to the threat of virus infection for a period of time. This window has been dubbed the ‘Zero Hour’ syndrome. To meet this challenge, employs Zero Hour and heuristic filters to seek out new, unknown viruses through additional mail scanning.

Spam Scanning (99% removal with 0.0003% false positives)

With spam levels regularly being measured at between 65 and 90 percent, uses leading edge technology to manage the sheer volume of unwanted email being delivered. Careful attention to connection management and integration of multiple best of breed filters has led to blocking the maximum quantities of spam with the lowest possible rate of false positives.

Dark Mail

Dark Mail is a phenomenon whereby message traffic is submitted by an attacker to numerous e-mail addresses in the hope of finding a valid target. A key trait of such an attack is that the majority of these e-mail addresses are non-existent. In all likelihood, these attacks are happening to most organisations on varying scales, however these nefarious activities tend to go un-detected, thus the term Dark Mail. If left unchecked, the attacks can scale to levels that cause extreme resource usage, message delays, black list outages and potential security breaches.

provides three levels of control that enable the filtering service to identify and detect dark mail recipients:

  • LDAP (Secure): Providing the ability for the filtering service to connect to an organisation’s directory, e.g. Active Directory, and periodically synchronise valid recipient addresses for filtering
  • Pattern Matching: Ability to configure intelligent address matching filters to identify valid and invalid recipients
  • White list management: Capability to upload and merge e-mail address recipient information into the service.

  • Given that every organisation is different, the multiple levels of control allow organisations to pick the solutions that work best for them.

Uniquely, the service also protects organisations from the security threats associated with the divulgence of e-mail address through DHA (Directory Harvest Attacks), by transparently consuming e-mails within the service, rather than publicly rejecting invalid e-mails. Reporting is provided to indicate the level of Dark Mail filtering that is taking place. This includes the ability to report on key Dark Mail attacks, including DHA (Directory Harvest Attacks) and DSA (Dictionary Spam Attacks).
